Description
CD 109
What’s known today as Tejano Music is enjoying an unprecedented wave of popularity. This disc samples some of the most influential singers and musicians who helped create and shape Tejano Music during its formative years in the late 1940s up through the early 1960s. These examples of largely urban music should be heard in conjunction with Arhoolie CD 104 “15 Tex-Mex Conjunto Classics” which features selections by conjuntos that equally contributed to the present sound of Tejano Music. Arhoolie’s American masters is a mid-line sampler series culled from our full price CDs. Each CD features the best known artists of a particular musical genre. Inside the booklet each song is referenced to the CD it originally came from with a photo mini of that CD cover and a listing of the artist’s other Arhoolie CDs.

REVIEW
“…is nothing more that yet another wonderful Arhoolie sampler that features some of the best classic Tejano releases from the late 1940’s through the early 1960’s. Each cut represents an artist whose material can be found on other solo releases. The focus on the most influential performers of a genre provides a chance to turn up the volume and check out Lydia Mendoza… Freddie Fender… Conjunto Bernal… Tony De La Rosa… and the rest of these 15 selections. Ranging from Rock and Roll and Ranchera to a couple of Polkas and a Waltz these archival materials from Arhoolie are a national treasure. Nothing more than wonderful Tejano music from a bygone era. Nothing less!”
