Like it or not, Eva Taylor (1895-1977) will always be judged in the shadow of her famous husband, composer-pianist-arranger-publisher Clarence Williams (1898-1965). As Okeh Records’ A&R man, he saw to it that Ms. Taylor was recorded extensively (usually on copyrights he held). Volume 1 (of 3) begins with Williams’ New Moon, a one-off for the shorted-lived black-owned Black Swan label. Along with her cover versions of Alberta Hunter’s Down Hearted Blues and Clarence Williams’ Gulf Coast Blues (originally recorded by Monette Moore), we have the very first vocal version of Church Street Sobbin’ Blues (originally recorded by The Louisiana Five), a tune better known today to blues guitarists from Eddie Lang’s exquisite 1928 version.
