Raised by Musical Mavericks: Recalling life lessons from Pete Seeger, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Doc Watson, Reverend Gary Davis and others Paperback – April 15, 2020. by. Mitch Greenhill illustrated paperback
We’ve received a number of copies of musician, creative manager, promoter,
producer, etal, Mitch Greenhill’s personal memoir of growing up in a
politically progressive post war Boston household where his father Manny
ran the infamous Folklore Productions.
Greenhill was introduced at an early age to the likes of Pete Seeger,
Sonny Terry, Rev. Gary Davis, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Doc Watson, to name but
a few, who would often stay at the Greenhill house.
His come-up-ance was first hand exposure to the musical circles they
operated in, all at the beginnings of what came to be called the Folk
Blues Revival.
More than just a fly on the wall, Greenhill was mentored by many,
developing relationships he refers to as ‘life lessons,’ presented here in
the form of anecdotes and lively prose. A series of illustrated journeys
ultimately leading to his becoming a professional touring/recording artist
and accompanist himself.
The 1950’s Boston/Cambridge music community provided the perfect setting
with nearby festivals at NewPort and the competing scene in New York’s
Greenwich Village adding to the mix.
In time he partnered with his dad (now called Folklore Inc.), who
represented high profile performers like Joan Baez into the seventies when
the company re-located to California. Familiar names drift through these
pages like Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal… making this an easy read full of
connections new to me. Just under 200 pages, I was able knock out this
book in one pandemic siting. In other words, I recommend this slim tome.
