Shanachie 109 / Color 60 minutes / This portrait of Angelique Kidjo, known as “the African Piaf,” follows her return to her West African home country of Benin after being away for 13 years. Mixed with performances from a homecoming concert in Cotonou and informal visits with mentors from her homeland, the film looks at the traditions, colors, sounds, and rhythms of Benin which form the core of her ever-evolving musical fusion of reggae, samba, funk, gospel, and zouk. Includes concert performances of some of her most popular songs: Agolo, Malaika, Shango, The Sound of the Drums, and her version of Summertime.
