CD 543
Two legends of Tejano music join forces.
In 2005 two of the greatest names in Norteño music accordionist Flaco Jiménez and bajo sexto player and songwriter Tomás Ortiz joined forces to record a new CD. Released on Flaco’s own label the limited release quickly sold out and has been unavailable until now. Few artists in conjunto and Tejano music have received the level of critical acclaim Flaco Jimenéz has enjoyed over the course of a career that has spanned six decades. Without compromising his musical vision Jiménez has introduced the traditional conjunto sound to mainstream pop and country listeners thanks to his collaborations with the Texas Tornados los Super Seven Dwight Yoakam and the Mavericks; and he is celebrated by adventurous rock fans through his work with Ry Cooder Carlos Santana and the Rolling Stones.
Tomás Ortiz of Los Alegres de Terán was one of the first superstars of the Mexican regional music today known universally as Musica Norteña. He and his former partner in los Alegres de Terán Eugenio Abrego were the founding fathers of this music that combines an accordion-driven sound with the rural vocal tradition of dueto. Although Eugenio passed away in 1988 Tomás Ortiz continued performing until his death in 2007.
