Description
Zarza CD-1004
This CD captures an informal jam of two legendary conjunto musicians, Lorenzo Martinez and Santiago Jimenez Jr. It was recorded one afternoon circa 2011 at Santiago’s studio in San Antonio. The musicians lived a block away from each other and got together regularly. Both grew up in the Ghost Town neighborhood on the West Side.
Lorenzo originally learned to play accordion as a child from conjunto founder Santiago Jimenez, Sr. and had his first gig backed up by Flaco Jimenez (Santiago’s older brother) at the tender age of 12! He had a long career playing accordion and recording with legends like Conjunto Rainbo, Los Turistas de Lorenzo Martinez, George y Mague, Pancho y Lore, Los Caballeros and Ramon “Rabbit” Sanchez, among others. Lore, who passed in 2020, remains an inspiration to conjunto musicians in Texas and beyond.
Santiago is an NEA Heritage Fellow and a winner of the National Medal of the Arts awarded by President Obama in 2016. He is a living legend of conjunto music, best known for his traditional accordion playing and singing. Here he shows his skill as a bajista.
