REVIEW

“Talk about getting around! The all-studentfolk ensemble from Richmond’s Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center glowed with Los Lobos and Lalo Guerrero on Papa’s Dream last year, and now on their debut CD they cover the wide spectrum of regional Mexican music they study at the center. The rich voices of Ruth Arroyo, Amalia Marines, Lucina Rodriguez, and Kristal Gray grab you on “El Corrido Del Maiz Caro,” and the talent keeps coming on “Perita En Dulce” with guest Santiago Jimenez Jr. on squeezebox. “Un Poquito De Pecado” is a relic bolero from the ’50s done here with the stylistic tinges of the pioneer Mendoza sisters from Texas. But probably the most impressive piece is “EI Corrido De Cecilia Rios,” a folk ballad written by the students for a friend who was killed a few years ago. A sad lament, it’s a credit to directors Eugene Rodriguez and Alicia Marines, whose aim is to teach these youth, whose ages range between twelve and nineteen, that folk music is a living art they can apply to their lives.”
