REVIEW
“… a set of instrumentals, and one that stresses the centrality to Jiménez’s music of playing for dancers; the play-list consists of nine polkas, four waltzes, a redova, a tango and a danzon. There’s no self-indulgence in Santiago’s playing; there is enormous technical skill, which sometimes finds its expression in flashy licks, but they’re always played ‘for your dancing pleasure,’ never as theatrics for their own sake. His accompanists (bajo sexto, string bass, and drums) do a fine, unobtrusive job, too, and the result is a CD of dance music that’s strict tempo, and yet swings like nobody’s business; it goes straight to the heart by way of the feet.”
