Description
In 1952 Folkways Records issued the legendary 6-LP series The Anthology of American Folk Music, compiled by the eccentric 78 records collector Harry Smith. Many historians credit the Anthology – with its recordings from the 1920s and 30s, the quirky liner notes, esoteric artwork and design – as an impetus for the folk music revival of the 1950s and 60s, and indeed it continues to exert its influence on music to this day.
Here, The Harry Smith B-Sides offers an “alternate universe” listening experience. Sequenced in the same order that Smith created, this box set features the flip side of each record he selected from his collection for the original Anthology.
Includes 4 CDs with 84 recordings, plus a full color 144-page book featuring original artwork by Harry Smith and essays by John Cohen, Lance Ledbetter and Eli Smith. Also liner note contributions from more than 80 fans of Harry Smith’s work, including Cole Alexander, Daniel Bachman, Devendra Banhart, Sarah Bryan, Rosanne Cash, Dom Flemons, Steve Gunn, Will Oldham, Amanda Petrusich, Steve Roden, Art Rosenbaum, Nathan Salsburg, and Peter Stampfel.
