Vol. 5 (1929-1936)

A variety of different blues-oriented vocalists and singers are featured on this continually intriguing CD. The emphasis is on obscure performers, most of whom have their complete small output reissued on this disc. Dating from 1929-1932, there are two titles apiece by vocalist-pianist Bill Pearson, Guy Smith (who may be John Erby), the vocal duo of George Allison and Willie White, and singers Monroe Walker and Andy Chatman. None (except Erby) received second chances to return to the studios. In addition, there are four songs featuring singer Carrie Edwards (the great stride pianist Cliff Jackson is on two of them), pianist-vocalist George Ramsey (who is possibly Georgia Tom Dorsey) is heard in three different settings (including backing singers Peggy Walker and Mae Belle Lee), and, from 1936, Sophisticated Jimmy La Rue sings three songs that fit into the general style. Blues collectors will want this set, and the other releases in this miniseries.
